Electromagnetic Travels - Julien Poidevin & claire Williams
From the second half of the XIX th century the invisible starts to be seen. Scientists, inventors, mediums, theosophists collectively explore what some may call “ether” or others “fluids” or “bodies” that are woven by forces, fluids and waves that emanate from animated or inanimate beings: cosmic rays, human thoughts, vital fluids of plants, mediumnistic energy's or the voices of the dead.. This invisible space is today saturated by our telecommunications. We have become mediums throughout our communicating machines. This talk will explore how our modern technologies and circuits were built upon popular beliefs and the uncanny techniques used to investigate this invisible matter.
[Biographies in the first comment]

Julien Poidevin graduated from «[ l’Ecole Supérieure d’Arts Plastiques et Visuels] » of Mons section (esapv/ Idm) . Inter-media artist, he works on devices who questions our relations to body and territory using different means of expressions. His work explores our relationship to space and perception.
In a aborescence construction, these art works develop through a group of complementary projects. They relate to sound scape, interactions dialogging between the inside and outside crossing urban territory, synaesthesic environments appealing to human bodies as well as acoustic games marking and revealing spaces, inter-media installations and immersive audiovisual installations.
Claire Williams works at the crossroads of textiles, sound and crafted electronics. Her installations can be seen as instruments that sense our super saturated electromagnetic environment. She makes sculptural antennas, embroidered radios or sometimes materializes the electromagnetic activity in knitted stitches, sound vibrations or light. She likes to work with unstable media, researching ways to create specific tools, usages or techniques to give us a sensitive experience of our daily environment. Still exploring our relationship to the world of the invisible, she is currently working on 19th century scientific apparatus, crossing popular beliefs and pseudo-science practices.
Claire Williams lives in Brussels. She holds a master's degree in Textile Design from ENSAV La Cambre. She exhibits internationally, teaches and gives workshops related to her artistic practice.
